Everything you need to know before buying an USB DVD Drive

An External USB DVD Drive Up Close

An external USB DVD drive is a device used to burn several types of data through laser into a disc. It is actually the same as the ones found on your desktop computer’s CPU, but the only difference is that it is placed on the outside of the CPU and is connected  to it through a USB, and hence the name.

As mentioned earlier, an external USB DVD drive is very useful when it comes to storing data like videos, music and pictures inside a disc. Aside from writing on these discs, this device can also be used to read the contents of a specific disc that you have. Not only music and videos can be stored in the discs because practically any type of data is accepted by all the discs available in the market.

For some people, most especially those who own a laptop, these devices are very important as these serve as their internal DVD drive. As a matter of fact, there are many reasons why people prefer to use these external devices over the internal ones.

The most obvious reason is that they are very portable and convenient; portable because they can be brought wherever you go, and convenient because it can be used on more than one laptop or desktop computer. Unlike when using an internal DVD drive, the user still needs to open up the case of the CPU just to get a hold of the drive itself.

In addition to this, external drives are better because unlike the internal ones, the user does not need to install the software because it will instantly be ready for use once the USB is plugged in the CPU.

However, even these advanced devices can also bring its users some disadvantages once they are bought. One of the most obvious and understandable bad thing about the external drives when compared to the internal is that the USB-connected devices tend to become slower when it comes to reading and writing the files.

Somehow, people already understand why this is so; the internal is directly connected to the motherboard so the processing of the information will really be faster when compared to the external. In addition to this, these external drivers have another drawback because it is more expensive than the internal ones. The good news is that people today are now able to convert their internal DVD drive to an external one so they really do not have to spend when they want to own one.

Clearly, an external USB DVD drive has both its positive and negative effects on its users. Because of this, it is just really up to the person to judge and weigh his/her options regarding the things that he/she is looking for in a DVD drive.

When everything has been figured out, it will surely be easier to decide on whether buying a brand new external drive or just converting one is a more convenient option for you. Either way, this device can really make the technological lives of people easier.
